It seems like my partner does not need as much sleep as I do. Here is the final cut of the love story we had with Meggie and Corneliu. It was a pleasure to work with Robert and we are already planning future projects together, so stay tuned!

7dtips

Tired of reading 7D news on a site that is supposed to be dedicated to the 5D Mark II? We heard you. We will now post all 7D related content to Canon7dTips.com.

We have not decided yet how we will manage content that is relevant to both 5D and 7D owners. So, until we figure it out, we will keep posting most of the content here.

The site not totally finished yet but we wanted to release it right now since there is new 7D content popping over the net every day. So if you are interested in Canon 7D news, visit the site now!

I was reviewing the clips we shot yesterday and found this horror. Look at Meggie left eye in this clip. What do you see? Me!

It might not be that noticeable at lower resolution, but when viewed full screen in HD, it is very annoying. At least to me…

While it is sometimes impossible to get out of the reflection (like in this case), a good way to minimize its effect is to be dressed in black. Of course, this never crossed my mind Sunday morning when I pick my shirt for the day! The weather was great and I was thinking about perfecting my tan…

At least I learned my lesson. Anyone has funny accidents/errors to share?

Yesterday I was out with my friend Robert Cato shooting the remaining clips for a love story we started the previous Monday. Here is the trailer, using only Roberts clips from the Monday shoot. We did not have a laptop to copy my files over.

Add my missing shots from last Monday and the ones we got yesterday and you  have all the ingredients to make this an incredible video. We got great locations (involved a lot of scouting), incredible light and a gorgeous couple. How can you go wrong with that? Once the final clip is completed, I will post an update.

I am publishing this right away to apply some pressure on Robert to finish the edit asap! Unfortunately, he is a busy man, so dont expect anything until next week.

Since I received my Z-finder, a lot of people have been asking me about it and even more about cheaper alternatives. While I don’t think there are any decent alternatives (yet) available on the market, here is a quick list of the ones I know of an have tested.

Hi guys,

it seems like everything I touch these days is bound to brake. First my 50mm1.4 broke, then I had the flipping shutter issue with my 5D MrkII and a few minutes ago the site was down because of a technical problem on the server. Lets just say that I should not be in the mood to start new and risky stuff. Yet, I am!

I took some time to do clean up on the site today and realized that I never finished the review of the Zacuto Tactical Shooter. Expect a post by the end of the week! I also fixed a few design issues so everything should look good and clean now.

The release of the 7D had me thinking about the future of canon5dtips and how restrictive such a name can be. Most of the information in the blog can be used by 7D owners. Yet, 5D owners might not be interested to know about 7D news and technicalities. That is why I decided to create another blog, a carbon copy of this one, dedicated to the 7D. Guess the name?

7dtips

It is still under construction for a few more days so don’t get too excited (yet).

By the way, I am still looking for contributors to 5D and 7D tips. So, if you are a content creator, photographers or expert in a specific field related to cinephotography, contact me and lets talk. There might be money and fame for you!

I am also looking for a machinist or someone with access to a CNC table for a new product I am working on. This product is not a viewfinder or follow focus. I am talking about original product here! Only contact me about this if you have the requirements since I wont disclose anything (other than saying it will be a must have) until it is ready for production.

Finally, I would like to thank every visitor who click the small social sharing/bookmarking buttons at the end of each post. Clicking these links really help the site to reach a broader audience and I sincerely appreciate that you spend a minute doing so! Thanks.

Reviewing the clips I did last Monday, I realized the exposure was not what I remember seeing on the LCD while shooting. After some thinking, I figured it out: I used to set the LCD brightness level to auto.  Since I was shooting outside, the ambient light sensor was calibrating the LCD brightness as if it was used in bright conditions while in fact I was looking at the LCD in a dark environment (the Z-finder).

The solution was, of course, to set the LCD brightness manually (first option in the second yellow menu) to a lower level. Pretty obvious tip but I guess (and hope) that I am not the only person who forgot about this!

I know this is totally not related to my previous installation of the Z-Finder(it is just a bad coincidence), but since Sunday morning my 5D has been behaving strangely.

In still mode, everything works fine but when I switch to liveview the shutter starts to flip randomly between 2-10 seconds. If I press the record button, it stops flipping and record normally. The flipping action is exactly the same as if the camera was in burst mode, except no pictures are taken. If I press the AF ON button while it is flipping, it will eventually stop, acquire focus and either stop flipping or not once I release the button.

To fix the issue, I  have tried to: change batteries, use another lens, clean everything, use manual focus and change camera settings. Nothing worked.

I Googled about this without success. Am I the first person experiencing this issue?

I am calling the store today to have it fixed. How much do you want to bet that I wont be able to reproduce the problem once in the store?

Of course this issue appeared the day I was shooting an engagement clip and did not have my spare 5d Mark II with me! GRrr

z-finder

As people are receiving their Z-Finder, reviews are popping everywhere on the net. The first one coming (that I am aware of) from M. Bloom and now there is one more from Mitch. As you could have guessed if you have been following my Gorilla rigs review, I am going to review it too. Actually, if it was not of some technical issues with the UPS custom broker department who evaluated my Z-finder at over 900$, I should have received mine first! So, to all of you who think that Z-gear is too expensive, know that the UPS guys think they worth more than twice as much! Read the rest of this entry »

What happen when 3 Kenko extention tubes meet with a Sigma 1.4x teleconverter and a Canon 100 Macro lens?

They merge together to create the Macrosaurus Rex!

macrosaurus_rex

First, let me say this little project had no particular goal in mind other than seeing what the end result would be. As you can see in the video below, adding so many layers between the lens and the sensor degrade the image quality drastically. Also, the amount of light required to expose the subject was substantial. Even at f22 my depth of field was smaller than 1mm which make this setup next to useless. Read the rest of this entry »
